This project, which is committed to environmental sustainability and social upliftment, aims to create a circular economy by collecting and recycling ocean bound plastic.

Over 88% of the plastic waste generated in Nigeria is not collected nor recycled, and ends up in landfills, drains, rivers, lakes and the ocean. Sachets, which provide small units of affordable goods to people in developing markets, form a large part of day to day litter.

To encourage more collection, this project offers informal waste pickers enhanced compensation. Waste pickers deliver the plastic to aggregators, or collection agents, who bale and transport it to this project partner’s state of the art recycling plants. The project partner produces high quality plastic granules and flakes, which are exported to countries as far as Bulgaria. These recycled materials are used by companies in packaging materials, containers, bottles, and household goods.

This project, which collects and recycles PET and PE/PP, also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimise air pollution from plastic burning, and creates valuable employment opportunities. Just over 50% of the employees working at the recycling plant, and the management team, are women.

Credit sales will help fund expansion of this partner’s waste management operations, including increasing the number of waste collectors, collection agents, and collection points, as well as improving collection infrastructure and increasing the number of recycling plants. They aim to offer higher payments to supply chain partners, ensuring they are well-compensated for their vital contributions.
