Recycling of PET in Java, Sumatra, and Makassar, Indonesia (PWRS)
Recycling of PET in Java, Sumatra, and Makassar, Indonesia (PWRS)
This project recycles plastic waste that falls outside the reach of Indonesia’s official waste collection system in Deli Serdang, Karanganyar, Makassar, Mojokerto, and Subang.
About 70% of Indonesia’s plastic waste is mismanaged due to lack of waste management infrastructure, and the majority of that comes from rural communities that even lack formal collection systems.
This project sources plastic waste from informal sector collectors, local community organizations such as Waste Banks, and from residential areas, streets, and shops. They purchase this collected plastic waste and recycle it into high-quality flakes.
Right now, they only collect plastic waste in the form of PET bottles. They sort, wash and process waste PET in their own state of the art facilities.
By producing high-quality flakes used in the automotive, textile, and apparel industries, and ensuring stable purchase prices for plastic waste, they aim to create jobs in local communities and contribute to solving the plastic waste problem in Indonesia.
Funds from sales of this recycling credit will be used to collect more plastic and support waste pickers with better payments, and expand processing capacity by investing in new equipment.
