Collection of Polyethylene Farm Plastics in Far North Queensland, Australia (PWRS)

This project implements and enhances collection services to remove agricultural waste, specifically flexible polyethylene, from banana farms in Far North Queensland. 

This initiative seamlessly integrates with existing horticultural practices and significantly reduces the impact of plastic waste on the Great Barrier Reef, surrounding water bodies, landscapes, and agricultural areas of Far North Queensland, Australia. 

Prior to the project start date, there were no efficient or systematic methods for collection or disposal of banana bunch bags or recycling of agricultural plastic waste, in Queensland's banana sector.  Banana producers and packers in remote parts of Far North Queensland would often leave, bury, or burn plastic on farms due to the high costs of waste collection and the absence of mandated collection. 

This project seeks to address this problem by supporting and subsidising the collection of flexible plastic waste from banana farms in the region and assisting in the prevention of plastic entering the environment and waterways.  The collected material undergoes, sorting and baling and is either disposed of at a managed landfill or directed to recycling facilities. 

The project, which was an Australian first, delivers additional benefits, including the preservation of native habitats, bolstering long-term productivity, and advancing business sustainability objectives in rural Queensland. Beyond environmental benefits, this project partner facilitates investment in rural and regional areas and supports local communities and business.
