Community Collection and Recycling of PP, HDPE, and PET in Viet Nam (PPRS)
Community Collection and Recycling of PP, HDPE, and PET in Viet Nam (PPRS)
Established in 2021 in Vietnam, the Project Partner operates a large-scale post-consumer plastic recycling project focused on recovering PET, HDPE and PP bottles and packaging collected entirely within Vietnam.
The project integrates an extensive community-based collection network of approximately 1,500–2,000 local collection stations and an estimated 18,000–20,000 independent waste pickers and source-level collectors, connecting them to a more structured and reliable recycling value chain. By increasing access to reliable purchasing opportunities, improving collection and sorting practices, and strengthening traceability, the project helps recover plastic that might otherwise be mismanaged or lost to the environment.
All collected plastic is processed in-house at the Project Partner's recycling facility using advanced Bottle-to-Bottle mechanical recycling technology. The facility combines automated and AI-enabled optical sorting, washing, extrusion, pelletizing and Solid-State Polymerization (SSP), with more than 91% process automation and rigorous quality-control systems. The project produces high-quality recycled rPET, rHDPE and rPP pellets for applications including beverage bottles, thermoforming and fiber, helping replace virgin plastic with recycled material and supporting a circular plastics economy. The project's rPET has received food-contact safety opinions from the U.S. FDA and EFSA, while its extensive certification portfolio includes ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 50001, 14064-1, 14067, FSSC 22000, GMP, HACCP, HALAL, GRS, OBP, RecyClass, SMETA, SA8000 and ISO/IEC 17025. The Project Partner also contributed to the development of TCVN 14399:2025, Vietnam's national standard for recycled PET.
Plastic credit revenue will support continued expansion of recycling capacity, investment in advanced processing equipment and SSP technology, research and development, quality improvements, renewable energy and workforce training. The project also operates a 3,855 kWp rooftop solar system, estimated to avoid approximately 3,400 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. Through its combination of plastic recovery, formal employment, community engagement, domestic recycling infrastructure and renewable energy investment, the project delivers meaningful environmental and social benefits and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
