Collection and Recycling of HDPE and PP in Malwana, Sri Lanka (PPRS)

This project addresses the growing volume of post-consumer plastic waste, particularly HDPE and PP, which often ends up in landfills or water bodies, ultimately impacting the ecological footprint and natural habitats. This has become a significant issue because Sri Lanka is an island nation; thus, a substantial volume of the mismanaged plastic waste ends up in the coastal environment, increasing the consequential damage.  The plastic waste which has high recyclable value represents a lost opportunity for resource recovery and circular economic growth in Sri Lanka.

Recyclable plastics for this project are collected through local communities and waste collection networks, thereby intercepting post-consumer material flow to the environment and directing it to proper material recovery. Through mechanical recycling, these plastics are transformed into valuable “Regenerated raw materials”, reintroduced into production cycles, and used to manufacture new products by closing the material loop, thus promoting the circular economy.

Funds generated through plastic credit sales are invested to strengthen collection infrastructure, improve sorting and processing facilities, and enhance incentives for local collectors and communities for sustaining the operations. This ensures a continuous and sustainable flow of quality recycled materials back into the economy, thus avoiding environmental pollution.

This project contributes to a circular economy by reducing dependency on virgin plastic, conserving natural resources, and minimizing environmental pollution. It also empowers local communities by creating green jobs, supporting livelihoods, and building ecological awareness, ultimately promoting a cleaner, more sustainable future for all.
