Ocean-Bound Community Collection and Recycling of PET in Manila, Philippines (PPRS)
Ocean-Bound Community Collection and Recycling of PET in Manila, Philippines (PPRS)
The Aling Tindera waste to cash program in the Philippines turns women micro-entrepreneurs into sustainability champions by providing them with the infrastructure, resources and training to purchase and collect plastic waste from their community.
Many of the women in this program run small “sari sari” or neighborhood stores that sell daily necessities. Community members can sell plastic waste to their local 'Aling Tindera', who cleans, bales and stores the plastic in a container van provided by the project partner. When it’s full, the project partner collects the container and pays the Aling Tindera for each delivery. The project aims to create a circular economy, by placing a value on plastic waste, and providing incremental income to the women and their communities.
Credits for this project will help fund the diversion of PET plastic from mismanaged landfills and open dumps to recycling facilities.
