Community Collection of PET/HDPE in Krabi, Trang and Ranong, Thailand (PWRS)
Community Collection of PET/HDPE in Krabi, Trang and Ranong, Thailand (PWRS)
This project partner is a social enterprise that collects ocean plastic from remote coastal and island communities across Thailand, and collaborates with companies to create circular supply chains.
Prices for recycled materials are too low to cover the cost of collection and transport from remote coastal areas and islands in Thailand. As a result, most plastic found in these areas is burned, dumped in illegal landfills, or left on the shore, where it goes back to sea and degrades into microplastics.
Funds from this credit allow the project to place a premium on plastic waste collected from hard to reach islands, incentivizing local collectors and aggregators, as well as provide training, transportation and personal protective equipment for collectors.
Formal and informal waste collectors collect and sort plastic waste on the beaches of Krabi, Ranong and Trang provinces, including remote islands. They deliver the waste to the aggregators that bring it, by boat and truck, to the project partner’s warehouses. Collected plastic can then be sent to recycling partners.
The project encourages collectors to prioritize collecting any kinds of plastics from the beach and coastal areas. These credits specifically help fund the collection of PET and HDPE plastic waste.
